Early Life and Career

Timothy James Walz (born April 6, 1964) is an American politician, former schoolteacher, and retired U.S. Army National Guard officer. A member of the Democratic Farmer-Labor Party (DFL), he has served as the 41st governor of Minnesota since 2019.

Before entering politics, Walz worked as a social studies teacher and coached football and track at Mankato West High School in Mankato, Minnesota.

Military Service

Walz enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard in 1981 and served for 24 years. He deployed to Iraq in 2005-2006 and retired from the military in 2005 with the rank of command sergeant major.

Political Career

Walz was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2006, representing Minnesota's 1st congressional district. He served in the House for 12 years, focusing on issues such as veterans' affairs, agriculture, and healthcare.

In 2018, Walz was elected governor of Minnesota, defeating Republican incumbent Jeff Johnson. He was re-elected in 2022, defeating Republican challenger Scott Jensen.
