Construction Complete on Vancouver's New Port Mann Bridge
Vancouver's Port Mann Bridge Opens After Years of Delay
Project Comes in Billions Over Budget
Vancouver's long-awaited Port Mann Bridge is finally open to traffic after years of delay and billions in cost overruns.
The new bridge, which replaces the old six-lane Port Mann Bridge, is a 10-lane cable-stayed bridge that spans the Fraser River.
Construction on the bridge began in 2005, but was delayed by a number of factors, including design changes, labour disputes, and environmental concerns.
Key Facts about the Port Mann Bridge: * 10 lanes wide * 500 meters long * $3.3 billion in cost overruns * 10 years to completeThe total cost of the project is now estimated to be $3.3 billion, which is more than double the original estimate of $1.6 billion.
Despite the delays and cost overruns, the Port Mann Bridge is expected to significantly improve traffic flow in the Vancouver area.
The new bridge is part of a $5.6 billion project to upgrade the Vancouver-to-Langley Corridor, which is one of the busiest highway corridors in Canada.
The Port Mann Bridge opened to traffic on Saturday, December 1, 2012.
